Florida updated its teen driver education requirement in 2025. Here's exactly what changed, what stayed the same, and what you need to do.
TLSAE stands for Traffic Law and Substance Abuse Education. For many years, this was the required 4-hour course for Florida teen drivers before obtaining a learner's permit. It covered traffic laws, DUI awareness, and substance abuse. The TLSAE course was widely available online and was a one-time requirement.
DETS stands for Driver Education Traffic Safety. Effective July 1, 2025, Florida replaced the old TLSAE with the new 6-hour D.E.T.S. course for all first-time drivers under 18. The DETS course is more comprehensive — covering defensive driving, distracted driving, road signs, vehicle safety, and Florida traffic law in greater depth. Like the TLSAE, it is available 100% online and self-paced.
