DETS Online exists to make one specific thing simple: helping a Florida family understand and complete the driver education their teen is legally required to finish before getting a learner's permit. We explain the requirement in plain language, make the course easy to start, and remove the guesswork that sends parents hunting through confusing government pages.
Florida changed its driver education requirement for minors. As of August 1, 2025, anyone under 18 who has never held a driver license from another state, country, or jurisdiction must complete a 6-hour Driver Education Traffic Safety (DETS) course before applying for a license. Many parents still remember the older 4-hour drug and alcohol course, known as TLSAE, which is why the requirement feels confusing.
Because the rules changed recently and only apply to a specific group of drivers, most general driver education sites don't explain them well. That's the gap we fill.
We cover the 6-hour DETS course, the Florida Class E Knowledge Exam, learner's permit steps, and what comes after the permit — including Florida's 50-hour supervised driving requirement. Our guides walk through age requirements, the documents your teen needs, and how completion gets reported, so nothing is a surprise at the FLHSMV office.
To be clear about how this works: DETS Online is an independent Florida teen driver education resource. We do not deliver the course or administer the exam ourselves. Secure registration, course delivery, and official permit testing are provided through our approved course partner, American Safety Institute.
When you click an enrollment button on this site, you'll finish checkout on our partner's secure site. That hand-off is intentional, and we say so up front so it isn't a surprise. Approval for the course curriculum and the official knowledge exam rests with our partner as an approved provider — not with DETS Online.
We think the point of driver education is safer roads, not just a completed requirement. We encourage families to treat the course as the beginning of a longer learning process — supervised practice across real conditions, night driving, and honest conversations about impairment and distraction. The course satisfies the law. The practice hours are what make a new driver safe.
